Every day and for every single task, we rely on AI, and also for our personal projects, which include codes if you are a coder, and research papers if you are a research student. You use it for various purposes, but all the documents and the conversations that you had with AI models are available on the internet, and that can be easily accessible by everyone.
You may ask, is that true one hundred percent? It was true. Last weekend, one random Redditor posted a thread on Reddit that the conversations that are made in Claude are available in public, and you can check that on Google using search queries, and the thread went viral, and Anthropic has now slowly been fixing the issue, and now it was removed from Google, but as of now, in Monday morning, I have checked some of the other search engines like Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and Brave, which still have the chats open available to public view. This is not even the first time this has happened — Forbes reported a similar incident back in September 2025, where around 600 Claude chats were found indexed on Google. OpenAI had the exact same problem with ChatGPT’s share links in 2025 too, and they ended up removing the public sharing feature altogether because of it.
It happened because when the user tries to publish the link on Claude, where there will be an option to choose available to public, available to private, only in that case, if you have given available to public, Claude forgets to auto index the convos as noindex. To be a bit more specific about the technical side, some of these share pages simply did not have the noindex tag on them.
Separately, Anthropic’s robots.txt file tells search engines not to crawl these pages at all, but here’s the catch — that Disallow rule actually stops Google from ever reading the noindex tag in the first place, which is part of why cleaning this up properly is messier than it looks. Because of this, all the convos that are available in public, as of now, I have checked, still the convos are available in secondary search engines apart from Google.
If you have ever shared a Claude conversation, go to Settings → Privacy → Shared Chats (or Your Data) and review everything you have published there. Unshare or delete anything you would not want a stranger to find through a simple search.
