Anthropic has been releasing new features, new models, and new services every week, like a software update to an application. Continuing that trend, they have released Claude Tag, which can help users ask questions about the chats and gain insights on the tasks on the application.
The application is none other than Slack, which is a workplace-based application that lets employees communicate among themselves in their organization. If you need to simply put it, it is a messaging app like WhatsApp, but for organizations. Now, Anthropic has integrated Claude Tag into the Slack application, where users can tag Claude and ask questions about the conversation if they were left off in the channel or missed something. They can add Claude Tag to their different channels and ask questions or assign a task, depending on the description of the channel, it can do the tasks as well. It has a context memory and will also learn from our conversations as well.
Claude Tag also has an “ambient mode,” which means it doesn’t just wait around to answer questions. When this mode is turned on, Claude can proactively jump into a channel on its own to share updates, flag something important from another part of the organization, or follow up on a task that has been forgotten, without anyone tagging it first. For example, Claude Tag can be connected to Gmail, so it reads incoming emails, recognizes when an important message arrives, and then alerts the user directly in Slack. This is what makes it feel less like a regular chatbot and more like a teammate that’s always paying attention.
This also raises a natural question: how is this different from a regular chatbot? The key difference is that Claude Tag has persistent, shared memory across an entire channel, not just a single user’s session. Everyone in that channel interacts with the same Claude, can see what it’s working on, and can pick up a task right where someone else left off, instead of starting a new, isolated conversation every time.
For anyone worried about an AI reading through all their Slack messages, Anthropic says access is tightly controlled. A systems admin has to specifically approve which tools, channels, and information Claude Tag can access, so it isn’t automatically reading everything by default.
It’s worth noting that Claude Tag also replaces Anthropic’s older “Claude in Slack” app. The legacy app is reportedly set to be retired around August 3, 2026, with a 30-day migration window for existing users to move over.
